Questions before you install

Everything below describes the FriSki beta. If your question is not here, mail us and it probably ends up on this page.

The app

What is FriSki?

FriSki helps a ski group stay together on the mountain. Friends appear as live beacons on the piste map, and the app says in your headphones when one comes within the distance you choose. A group member can set a shared meeting point. Spoken directions are in beta and help you check your phone less often.

Which phones does it run on?

iPhone and Android. Not in the App Store or Google Play yet. The free beta is for Android and iPhone: join the waitlist and we’ll email you an invite.

Do I need a smartwatch?

No. A watch is optional. On Android, a ski day card in your notifications shows the next turn, the meeting point and your group; on iPhone the same card is a Live Activity, coming with the first iPhone build. Garmin owners in the beta can try an early version of the watch app with their phone nearby; it has not been tested on a watch on the mountain yet. An Apple Watch app is in development.

Does it work for snowboarders?

Yes. Nothing in FriSki cares what is strapped to your feet. The app reads your motion to tell skiing from riding a lift from standing still, and that works the same either way.

On the mountain

Does it work without mobile signal?

The map does, once you have downloaded your resort. Do it on Wi-Fi before you travel: pistes, lifts and place names are then stored on your phone, and GPS needs no network, so in a dead zone the map keeps drawing and your route keeps going. Your friends’ live positions do need a connection, and they come back the moment coverage does.

Which resorts are covered?

27 ski resorts across France, Austria, Italy, Switzerland, Andorra, Bulgaria and Georgia, including Chamonix, Val Thorens, Zermatt, St. Anton, Cortina d’Ampezzo and Grandvalira. Every one has a map you can download for offline use. Spoken directions are in beta and have not been tested on snow yet.

Is FriSki a safety device?

No, and please do not treat it as one. Positions and alerts can be delayed or wrong, especially where signal is poor. In an emergency, call your local emergency number or ski patrol.

Privacy

Who can see my location?

Only the group you are in, and groups are invite-only: someone has to scan your QR code, type the group code or open your share link to get in. Your position is not shared with anyone outside that group.

Does FriSki keep a history of where I went?

No route and no track. Only your latest position is kept, and the next one replaces it, so there is no movement history in the live database to be leaked, sold or subpoenaed. One thing does get saved: when your day ends, the day's totals (distance, vertical, top speed, runs, time moving) go to your account as a single aggregate with no coordinates in it, so you can share it later. Your group sees it only if you choose to share that day. A database backup taken before you deleted something still holds it for as long as that backup is kept, which is the one exception we will not pretend away.

Read the privacy policy

Can I take a run without my group seeing where I am?

Yes. Ghost mode keeps you in the group but stops broadcasting your position. Turn it on for a lap off the side and off again when you ski back in. You never have to leave the group to get privacy.

How do I delete my account and my data?

In the app, at any time, without emailing anyone for permission. See the deletion guide for limited retention exceptions, including existing backups.

Getting it

Is FriSki in the App Store or on Google Play?

Not in the App Store or Google Play yet. The free beta is for Android and iPhone: join the waitlist and we’ll email you an invite.

Join the waitlist

How does the beta work?

Join the waitlist on the home page. We send invites by email as places open: Android through a Google Play testing link, iPhone through TestFlight. A short guide in the app sets up your group, the map and audio, and after a ski day you can rate it or send us a note from Settings.

What does it cost?

Nothing while it is in beta. Beta friends get every new build first.

How do I get my friends on it?

One of you creates the group and the rest join by scanning a QR code or typing the group code. There is a share link too, for the friend who is still on the train.

Still stuck? Mail support@friski.co. It reaches the two people who build FriSki, not a queue.
